Fluorescent Lighting

If you have any interest in having your freshwater planted tank thrive I believe the first place to start is getting enough of the proper lighting. I started out by buying a Perfecto SHO 48" compact flourescent strip light that contains 2 X 55 watt 5400K bulbs. This occupys the exact same footprint as the standard 48" strip light and is extremely bright. Perfecto was the first company to offer these types of lights at a reasonable price for the home aquarium.

There now are more companys selling similar set ups, but this does not address the DIY market , of which there seems to be a great demand. many people spend lots of time hunting on the web and calling lighting shops looking for the correct sockets, ballasts, bulbs, lamp holders, cords etc. We look no further !!

There is a internet, mail order company that I can recommend without reservation, that packages all the electrical components needed to either retrofit an existing hood or strip light or if you want to build your own custom enclosure! There is even a simple plan to build your own strip lights from readily available wood from your local home improvement store.

AH Supply has what you need at a most economical price! I purchased the 2 X 55 watt kit and retrofitted a Perfecto 48" Double Bright strip light in just under an hour and 1/2 and am extemely pleased with the results! Due to the advanced reflector design of the AH kit reflector it puts out even more light than the Perfecto SHO light. Kim, the owner at AH Supply is more than happy to answer questions. So email or call him if you have any questions, he has always gotten back to me very quickly and I even called him on a Friday night with questions which he quickly answered.
